Understanding Customer Lifetime Value for Repeat-Purchase Brands

September 28, 20262 min readBy Centurysoft Editorial Team

A repeat-purchase brand can grow revenue while acquiring customers who never return. Customer lifetime value helps connect acquisition to the relationship that follows, but it is easy to overstate.

A brand sees enthusiastic repeat purchases among customers who first bought a refillable product. Before shifting acquisition spend, it should check whether these customers had different discounts, service costs or acquisition routes. LTV helps prioritize questions; it does not make all cohort differences causal.

Start with contribution

Subtract returns, discounts and relevant fulfillment or service costs where available. Group customers by acquisition cohort and comparable observation windows. A customer acquired last month has not had the same opportunity to repeat as one acquired a year ago.

Customer value is affected by the experience the brand creates. A first purchase that arrives late may suppress repeat buying; a helpful service response may improve it. Treat LTV as a dynamic estimate, not a permanent trait assigned to a person. That keeps the team focused on the levers it can improve.

Explore behavior, not just averages

Which first products lead to useful repeat purchases? How long between orders? Does a subscription or replenishment reminder help, or does it simply pull an already-planned purchase forward? Look for differences among cohorts without assuming correlation is cause.

Use the finding carefully

Adjust acquisition spend and retention efforts against realistic payback. Revisit estimates as cohorts age. LTV should help a team decide what it can afford to acquire and serve a customer well, not provide a flattering headline number.
